Sat Jun 28 | 12:12 | Trey Sweeney Sent to Triple-A |
The Detroit Tigers have optioned infielder Trey Sweeney to Triple-A Toledo. In a corresponding move, the Tigers have activated Matt Vierling (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list. Sweeney has seen close to an everyday role in the Detroit starting lineup through the first half of the season. Sweeney has appeared in 70 games and held a .221/.280/.314 line with five doubles, one triple, four home runs, and two stolen bases. Under the hood, he has generated a low .265 xwOBA, .213 xBA, and a .321 xSLG, all of which are well below the average marks of qualified hitters. Additionally, over the past two weeks, Sweeney has begun to spend most of his time on the bench. Fantasy managers should keep an eye on his production at Toledo, as he should be in the mix to return to Detroit in the second half. He is not worth stashing in any fantasy formats. |

Fri Jun 6 | 18:11 | Trey Sweeney on the Bench Again on Friday |
Detroit Tigers shortstop Trey Sweeney will start Friday's game on the bench against the visiting Chicago Cubs at Comerica Park. Javier Baez will make the start at shortstop for this one and will bat in the nine-hole against Cubs right-hander Ben Brown. Sweeney hasn't done much at the plate so far in 2025 with a .222/.279/.312 slash line, four home runs, 23 RBI, 25 runs scored and two stolen bases in his 189 at-bats. As a result, he's lost playing time of late and finds himself on the bench on Friday for the fourth time in the last six games. The former first-rounder has lost playing time with the Tigers getting healthier, and Detroit has gone with Baez and Zach McKinstry at the 6 in recent days. Baez has been bouncing between shortstop and the outfield this year and has actually looked much better at the plate, hitting .275 (50-for-182) with six homers. There's still power there, but he's a low-upside DFS play in the nine-hole. |

Sat May 17 | 13:39 | Trey Sweeney Not in Saturday's Lineup |
Detroit Tigers shortstop Trey Sweeney is not in Saturday's lineup when they continue a series against the Toronto Blue Jays. Sweeney has been in the starting nine in each of the past four games. During this stretch, Sweeney has held a strong .294 AVG with a home run and six RBI. Over his last 14 contests, Sweeny has been one of the most productive hitters in the sport, as he posted an impressive .357/.362/.536 slash line with one double, three home runs, and 13 RBI. This afternoon, Zach McKinstry will get the starting nod at shortstop and will bat in the nine-hole. Fantasy managers should expect Sweeney to return to the lineup on Sunday. McKinstry and the Tigers are a viable target in DFS facing Toronto left-hander Eric Lauer, who has only served in a bulk relief role this season. |

Sun May 11 | 11:24 | Trey Sweeney Not In Sunday's Lineup |
Detroit Tigers shortstop Trey Sweeney is not in Sunday's lineup when they conclude a series against the Texas Rangers on Sunday afternoon. Sweeney has become an everyday player in the Detroit starting nine and will be given a typical day off. Fantasy managers should expect the former 20th overall pick to return to the starting nine on Monday evening when they host the Boston Red Sox. This afternoon, Zach McKinstry will shift to shortstop and bat in the six-hole. Over his last 20 games, Sweeney has been very productive at the plate, holding a .275/.359/.377 slash line with one double and two home runs. However, he has generated a modest .308 xwOBA, which suggests he could face some regression later in the season. The Tigers are best to fade in DFS facing Texas right-hander Nathan Eovaldi. |

Mon May 5 | 10:00 | Trey Sweeney Has A Career Day At The Plate |
Detroit Tigers shortstop Trey Sweeney had a career day on Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels. In the afternoon, he went 4-for-5 with six RBI, two runs scored, and one home run. The six RBI in a single game was a career high for him, and the four hits tied his career best. The Tigers went on to win this contest 13-1 over the Halos and left their four-game series with them taking three out of four. On the season, Sweeney improved his slash line to .234/.317/.355. Sweeney, a former first-round pick in 2021, is now on a five-game hitting streak and will look to keep that going on Tuesday as the Tigers start a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies. For now, Sweeney can be left on the waiver wire in most 10-12 team leagues, but is worth keeping an eye on as the season progresses. |

Mon Apr 7 | 13:07 | Kerry Carpenter, Trey Sweeney Out Versus Lefty |
Detroit Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter and shortstop Trey Sweeney will take a seat on the bench for Monday's series opener at Comerica Park against the visiting New York Yankees with left-hander Carlos Rodon on the bump. Manuel Margot will start in right field and bat fifth, while Javier Baez will get the start at short and bat sixth. Left-handed-hitting infielder Zach McKinstry is also out of the starting lineup. Carpenter won't also sit against southpaws, but he'll take a seat in this one to begin the week. He's gone just 7-for-32 (.219) in the first nine games of the season, but he's also added three home runs, a double and eight RBI for fantasy managers. Margot is much better against lefties but lacks pop for DFS upside. He's hitting .375 with an RBI in eight career at-bats against Rodon, while Baez is hitting just .133 against Rodon in 15 career at-bats. |

Mon Mar 3 | 14:09 | Trey Sweeney Not A Lock To Start At Shortstop |
The Athletic's Cody Stavenhagen doesn't have Detroit Tigers infielder Trey Sweeney as a lock to be the team's starting shortstop on Opening Day in late March. Carrying both Sweeney and Zach McKinstry would make the Tigers extremely left-handed and could force outfielder Kerry Carpenter into the lineup against left-handed pitchers. Stavenhagen projects Sweeney opening the 2025 season at Triple-A Toledo, while Javier Baez (hip) and McKinstry share duties at the 6. The bottom line is that the Tigers aren't just going to give the job to the 24-year-old Sweeney, even though he played well late last year to help Detroit get into the playoffs. In a best-case scenario, he could be on the strong side of a platoon at shortstop against right-handed pitchers. Remember, Sweeney had just two hits in 22 at-bats over seven postseason games and probably could use a little more minor-league seasoning. |

Tue Feb 18 | 20:02 | Trey Sweeney Makes "Minor" Swing Adjustments |
Detroit Tigers shortstop Trey Sweeney made "minor" swing adjustments during the offseason. Jason Beck of MLB.com noted that the young infielder focused on timing, especially against fastballs. Sweeney expressed that he struggled against fastballs during his first look at the majors, which was a priority in the offseason. Sweeney made his big league debut with the Detroit Tigers in August and logged 36 appearances. Across this small stint, the former 20th overall pick held a .218/.269/.373 line. He hit four home runs and swiped two bags. When facing breaking pitches, Sweeney generated an impressive .552 xSLG. However, against fastballs, the infielder generated a much lower .364 xSLG. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his development during spring training as he could earn the starting role over veteran Javier Baez (hip). If he does earn the job, he could be worth a late flier in deeper formats. |

Sun Sep 8 2024 | 19:36 | Trey Sweeney Collects Four Hits |
Detroit Tigers infielder Trey Sweeney put together an excellent performance at the plate during Sunday's game against the Oakland Athletics. The former first-round pick has struggled early in his big league career, but had the bat going on Sunday. Sweeney took A's starter J.T. Ginn deep in the third inning for his third homer of the season. It would just continue from there as Sweeney finished the game 4-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, and a stolen base in the win. He's still not worth rostering in most fantasy formats, but maybe this is a sign of good things to come for Sweeney. |
