Tue Jul 1 | 23:52 | Matthew Boyd Shines in Eighth Victory |
Chicago Cubs starter Matthew Boyd picked up his eighth win of the season in his team's 5-2 victory over the Cleveland Guardians. Boyd went seven innings, allowing five hits, one walk, and two earned runs with five strikeouts. The veteran lefty has emerged as an integral piece of the division-leading Cubs' rotation. He's posted a 2.65 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 87 strikeouts in 98 2/3 innings pitched. There are some signs of regression in his profile, as Boyd has stranded an unusually high 80.4% of baserunners, and his 8.4% home run-to-fly-ball rate is well below his career norms. Even if Boyd pitches closer to his 3.44 xERA the rest of the way, he'll still be a useful fantasy starter with solid win potential every time he takes the mound for the Cubs. |

Mon Jun 23 | 19:08 | Matthew Boyd "All Good" for his Next Start |
Chicago Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd (shoulder) is "all good" to make his next scheduled start on Wednesday against the division-rival St. Louis Cardinals after coming out of his last start with a bruised left shoulder, according to manager Craig Counsell. Boyd didn't have any issues during his between-starts bullpen session. The 34-year-old veteran southpaw was hit by a comebacker in his last start against the Seattle Mariners last Friday and allowed two earned runs while walking two and striking out six in five innings in a no-decision. Boyd has been a key rotation piece for the Cubbies so far in 2025 with a 6-3 record, 2.84 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 79:21 K:BB in 85 2/3 frames over his 15 starts. However, a 3.55 xERA and 3.65 FIP point to regression coming for the aging lefty that is only striking out 8.3 hitters per nine innings. |

Sat Jun 14 | 16:50 | Matthew Boyd Excellent in Victory |
Chicago Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd (6-3) pitched a gem Saturday to notch his sixth win of the season. Boyd led the Cubs to a 2-1 victory with six innings of one-run ball. He allowed only one hit, a first-inning solo home run by outfielder Andrew McCutchen, and tallied three strikeouts against one walk. It was the fourth straight quality start for Boyd, who has given up a mere four earned runs in 25 1/3 innings since May 28. Overall, Boyd has recorded a 2.79 ERA (3.46 xERA) with 73 strikeouts and 19 walks in 80 2/3 frames. Although Boyd didn't hit the 80-inning mark in any season from 2020-24, the Cubs took a two-year, $29 million gamble on him in free agency. The results have been great so far. Boyd will take the ball next against one of his former teams, the Seattle Mariners, on Friday. |

Wed Jun 4 | 23:11 | Matthew Boyd Takes Hard-Luck Loss on Wednesday |
Chicago Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd (5-3) suffered his third loss of the year in a 2-0 decision against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday. Although Nationals lefty MacKenzie Gore outdueled Boyd, the Chicago southpaw was terrific in his own right. He chipped in 7 1/3 innings of two-run, four-hit ball while striking out six and issuing only one walk. Boyd, who has totaled five quality starts in six chances since the beginning of May, is thriving in his first season as a Cub. The 34-year-old has logged a 3.01 ERA with 70 strikeouts and 16 walks in 68 2/3 innings. He'll go on the road to face a formidable Philadelphia Phillies offense on Monday. |

Thu May 29 | 09:37 | Matthew Boyd Wins Again at Wrigley |
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Matthew Boyd improved to 5-2 in his 11 starts with the Cubs, with a 3.08 ERA, 3.44 FIP, and 1.26 WHIP overall on the season. He gave up just one unearned run in six innings with eight strikeouts and four hits allowed to the Rockies in his team's 2-1 win. He has been especially sharp at home, going 5-0 in five starts at Wrigley Field with a 2.40 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and 3.50 FIP. He has 32 strikeouts in 30 innings at home and has held opponents to a .298 wOBA in those five outings. The veteran lefty has been a key part of Chicago's rotation, and he's scheduled to make his next start on the road against the Nationals next Wednesday. He has been strong enough to be a mixed-league option in favorable matchups, and especially when pitching at home. |

Sat May 17 | 23:04 | Matthew Boyd Solid in Fourth Victory |
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Matthew Boyd allowed four hits and three earned runs in Saturday's 7-3 win against their cross-town rivals, the Chicago White Sox. Boyd struck out eight and walked none to earn his sixth quality start (third straight), improving to 4-2 in 2025. He was mostly excellent, but ran into trouble with the long ball as Chase Meidroth and Timothy Elko both tagged him for solo home runs in the first and fifth innings. It's been more of an issue for him recently, letting up four of the seven against him across his last three outings. Still, the veteran was solid again, as he's yet to yield more than three earned runs in any of his nine appearances. Boyd will carry a strong 2.98 ERA and 1.20 WHIP into his next trip to the mound, which figures to come against the Cincinnati Reds late next week. |

Tue May 6 | 05:48 | Matthew Boyd Strikes Out Seven, Earns Win On Monday |
Chicago Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd picked up a quality start in a 9-2 win over the San Francisco Giants on Monday. Boyd allowed two runs on five hits over six innings while striking out seven and not issuing any walks. The veteran southpaw only made one mistake in the form of a two-run homer to Luis Matos in the fourth inning. Boyd is putting together an excellent first season with the Cubs, posting a 3-2 record, 2.75 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and 37 strikeouts over 39 1/3 innings of work. He will look to keep it rolling in his next start, which will be Sunday against the New York Mets. |

Sat Apr 5 | 21:31 | Matthew Boyd Throws Six Scoreless Innings |
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Matthew Boyd was excellent on the mound during Saturday's game against the San Diego Padres. The left-hander seemingly had no issues as he tossed six scoreless innings, allowing five hits, one walk, and striking out five batters in the win. I don't think too many people had Boyd throwing 11 scoreless innings to start the season on their 2025 bingo cards. The 34-year-old has been incredible to start the season, but will run into a tough matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers in his next start. It's understandable if fantasy managers are hesitant to add Boyd ahead of this start. |

Mon Dec 2 2024 | 14:10 | Matthew Boyd Lands With Cubs On Two-Year Deal |
Free-agent veteran left-hander Matthew Boyd agreed to a two-year, $29 million deal with the Chicago Cubs on Monday. Boyd will make $14.5 million per year plus $1 million in incentives ($500,000 per season). The 33-year-old southpaw was recovering from Tommy John surgery early in 2024 and didn't sign with the Cleveland Guardians until June. When he finally debuted, he was effective on the mound in Cleveland, going 2-2 with a 2.72 ERA (3.29 FIP), a 1.13 WHIP, 46 strikeouts and 13 walks in 39 2/3 frames over his eight starts during the regular season. In the postseason, Boyd was even better, giving up only one run in 12 innings pitched. Although Boyd hasn't made more than 15 regular-season starts in a single season since 2019, he'll give the Cubbies some valuable starting experience for their starting rotation to open the 2025 campaign. |

Wed Oct 16 2024 | 18:10 | Matthew Boyd To Start Game 3 For Guardians |
Cleveland Guardians left-hander Matthew Boyd will make the start in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees on Thursday at Progressive Field. Boyd will try to prevent the Yankees from taking a commanding 3-0 lead in the series. The 33-year-old veteran southpaw will try to keep the good times rolling in his third career postseason start after blanking the division-rival Detroit Tigers over 6 2/3 innings in his two starts against them in the AL Division Series. In those starts, Boyd allowed five hits, walked three and struck out 10 batters. He made only eight starts during the regular season for Cleveland but was solid with a 2.72 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 46 K's. Boyd allowed three earned runs on four walks and two K's in 5 1/3 innings in his lone outing against the Yankees back on Aug. 20 in the Bronx. |

Fri Oct 11 2024 | 16:58 | Matthew Boyd To Start Game 5 On Saturday |
Cleveland Guardians left-hander Matthew Boyd will make the start for Cleveland on Saturday in the decisive Game 5 of the American League Division Series against the division-rival Detroit Tigers at Progressive Field, according to manager Stephen Vogt. The 33-year-old southpaw will be going on regular rest in the winner-take-all contest after going 4 2/3 shutout frames with five strikeouts in the team's Game 2 loss on Monday. Boyd will be opposed by Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal, who is the overwhelming favorite to win the AL Cy Young this year after winning the AL pitching Triple Crown. He'll be hoping to replicate his performance his last time out against his former team. Boyd only made eight starts during the regular season for the Guardians but was on point with a 2.72 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP in his 39 2/3 innings while walking 13 and striking out 46. He certainly doesn't have the type of upside as Skubal, though. |

Sat Oct 5 2024 | 12:01 | Matthew Boyd To Start Against Old Team In Game 2 |
Cleveland Guardians left-hander Matthew Boyd is expected to start in Game 2 of the American League Division Series on Monday against his old team, the Detroit Tigers, at Progressive Field. It will be a tough assignment while being opposed by Tigers lefty Tarik Skubal, who is the overwhelming front-runner to win the American League Cy Young in 2024. A shoulder injury delayed Boyd's 2024 debut with Cleveland until August, limiting him to just eight starts (39 2/3 innings). He was strong in those eight starts, though, only allowing 16 runs (12 earned) while walking 13 and striking out 46 batters. Boyd did not face the Tigers in any of his eight starts this year. His inclusion on the ALDS roster for Cleveland has left right-hander Ben Lively as the odd man out. In Boyd's eight starts, he never allowed more than three earned runs, but he also hasn't gone beyond 4 1/4 innings since Sept. 6. He'll be a DFS sleeper for Monday's slate of games. |

Wed Sep 11 2024 | 21:37 | Matthew Boyd Strikes Out Nine On Wednesday |
Cleveland Guardians starter Matthew Boyd pitched well on Wednesday as his team beat the Chicago White Sox 6-4. Boyd went 4 1/3 innings, gave up four runs (one earned) on six hits, walked two and struck out nine. He did not factor into the decision. Boyd, who missed the end of last year and most of this year recovering from elbow surgery, has been very good since making his season debut on August 13. In six starts (33 IP), he is (2-1) with a 2.18 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and a 7:35 BB: K. Boyd's strong return brings promise to the Guardians, as they are in for a tight (and exciting) September and October. The southpaw can be used as a streamer in his next start on Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins. |

Tue Aug 13 2024 | 15:54 | Matthew Boyd Activated And Making Season Debut On Tuesday |
The Cleveland Guardians activated left-hander Matthew Boyd (elbow) from the 15-day injured list on Tuesday and optioned right-hander Peter Strzelecki to Triple-A Columbus in a corresponding move. Boyd will make his 2024 debut with the Guardians and start on Tuesday against the visiting Chicago Cubs at Progressive Field. The 33-year-old veteran has a decent matchup on tap against the Cubbies, but we still wouldn't recommend him as a fantasy streamer in his first start back off the long road to recovery from Tommy John surgery. However, Boyd looked great during his minor-league rehab assignment, posting a 0.83 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings. Expect Boyd to be limited from a pitch-count perspective in his 2024 debut. |

Mon Aug 5 2024 | 20:30 | Matthew Boyd To Make Another Rehab Start On Wednesday |
Cleveland Guardians left-hander Matthew Boyd (elbow) will make another minor-league rehab start on Wednesday with Triple-A Columbus in what could be his final rehab outing before joining the big-league roster. Boyd has already made four rehab starts as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery, but it's unclear whether he'll be used as a starter or a reliever in his eventual debut with the team with Alex Cobb (hip, finger, shoulder) also nearing his 2024 debut. The 33-year-old southpaw did have a decent 24.1% strikeout rate in 15 starts for the Detroit Tigers last year, but it came with a 5.45 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 71 innings before his elbow injury. At best, Boyd will probably be a starting option for fantasy managers in AL-only leagues down the stretch if he makes starts for the Guardians. |

Wed Jul 17 2024 | 12:02 | Matthew Boyd Sent On Rehab Assignment |
Cleveland Guardians left-hander Matthew Boyd (elbow) was sent out on a minor-league rehab assignment on Tuesday to the rookie-level Arizona Complex League. Boyd was signed by Cleveland in June and is on the 15-day injured list as he recovers from Tommy John surgery that he had in June of last year. It's good news that the veteran 33-year-old southpaw is now embarking on a rehab assignment, but he's still probably a month away from being an option for the big-league roster. It's unclear what role the Guardians envision for Boyd when he's healthy, but 160 of his 174 appearances in the big leagues over the last nine seasons have come in a starting role. He went 5-5 with a 5.45 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with 73 strikeouts and 25 walks in 15 starts for the Tigers in 2023 before having Tommy John surgery. Boyd is unlikely to be much of a fantasy option in mixed leagues the rest of the way in 2024. |

Thu Jun 27 2024 | 19:32 | Matthew Boyd Agrees With Guardians |
Free-agent left-hander Matthew Boyd (elbow) agreed to an undisclosed major-league deal with the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday, according to a source. The deal is pending a physical. Boyd had Tommy John surgery on his left elbow last June and won't immediately join the Guardians' big-league roster, and it's unclear how long it will before he could be pitching in games for Cleveland. At the very least, he'll give the Guardians some veteran pitching depth. Boyd has nine seasons of major-league experience after originally being drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the sixth round of the 2013 draft out of Oregon State. In 15 starts for the Detroit Tigers last year before getting injured, he went 5-5 with a 5.45 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with a 73:25 K:BB in 71 innings. Fantasy managers, even in the deepest of leagues, shouldn't expect much from Boyd the rest of the 2024 season. |

Tue Jun 27 2023 | 18:16 | Matthew Boyd To Undergo Tommy John Surgery |
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Matthew Boyd (elbow) has been placed on the 60-day injured list on Tuesday. That is not good news after Boyd exited early during Monday's start against the Texas Rangers due to elbow discomfort. Now, it appears the left-hander is set to miss the rest of the season due to a partial sprain of his left UCL. Boyd is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery. The Tigers rotation takes another hit with Eduardo Rodriguez (finger) and Tarik Skubal (elbow) already sidelined. Luckily, right-hander Matt Manning (foot) is set to return on Tuesday, so his return will soften the blow of Boyd. The expectation is that Boyd won't be able to pitch again until mid-season of 2024. |

Mon Jun 26 2023 | 22:12 | Matthew Boyd Leaves Early With Elbow Discomfort |
Updating a previous report, Detroit Tigers left-hander Matthew Boyd (elbow) left his start early on Monday against the Texas Rangers with left-elbow discomfort. Boyd only made it two-thirds of an inning in the first and allowed a run on a solo home run while striking out two. Fantasy managers will want to check back for updates on his status after the Tigers get the results of tests back either Monday night or Tuesday morning. The good news for Detroit is that if Boyd requires an injured-list stint, they have Matt Manning (foot) returning to the rotation on Tuesday and lefties Eduardo Rodriguez (finger) and Tarik Skubal (elbow) not far behind him. Boyd entered his start on Monday with a 5.37 ERA (4.25 FIP), 1.32 WHIP, 25 walks and 71 K's in 70 1/3 innings over his 14 starts. |

Mon Jun 26 2023 | 21:00 | Matthew Boyd Leaves Start After 15 Pitches |
Detroit Tigers left-hander Matthew Boyd left his start against the Texas Rangers on Monday with an apparent injury. Boyd threw just 15 pitches before departing, getting two outs via strikeouts and allowing one run on one hit. Following his 15th pitch, Boyd was visited on the mound by manager A.J. Hinch and the Tigers' head trainer. He was replaced on the mound by Will Vest. Stay tuned as the Tigers are likely to update Boyd's status following Monday's game. |
