Tue Sep 912:32Frankie Montas to Undergo Tommy John Surgery
New York Mets right-hander Frankie Montas (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a torn UCL on Tuesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. He's expected to miss the entire 2026 season as a result. The Mets will end up getting little to no value from the two-year, $34 million guarantee they gave Montas in free agency last winter. Multiple injuries limited the 32-year-old to nine appearances (seven starts) and 38 2/3 innings this season, and he wasn't able to hold a rotation spot when healthy. Montas recorded a disastrous 6.28 ERA with a 1.60 WHIP, 32 strikeouts, and 14 walks in 2025. It's unlikely he'll have a chance to rebound until 2027.

Thu Aug 2816:50Frankie Montas has UCL Tear, Could Miss All of 2026
New York Mets right-hander Frankie Montas (elbow) needs surgery to fix a torn UCL in his right elbow, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. It remains to be seen if Montas will undergo Tommy John surgery or have an internal-brace procedure, but a full UCL reconstruction is considered "most likely." If the 32-year-old veteran has a full UCL reconstruction, it will most likely keep him out for the entire 2026 campaign. However, Montas will almost certainly exercise his $17 million player option for next year. The Dominican hurler didn't make his 2025 debut until June 24 due to an injury that he suffered in spring training, and he was not effective at all when he did rejoin the Mets. In nine outings for New York, Montas went 3-2 with a 6.28 ERA and 1.60 WHIP with 32 strikeouts in 38 2/3 innings. He will be off the fantasy radar entirely in 2026.

Sat Aug 2321:47Frankie Montas Done for the Season
New York Mets starting pitcher Frankie Montas (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured list on Saturday. It sounds like Montas has a significant UCL injury that could require Tommy John surgery. Ouch, this isn't what anyone wanted to see considering Montas didn't even make his season debut until June. The right-hander was struggling on the mound and was sent to the bullpen earlier this month. That being said, the Mets aren't going to take too big of a blow by losing Montas considering he wasn't a starter anymore. The 32-year-old is a free agent after the season, so potential Tommy John surgery could be extremely bad for his value.

Sat Aug 2316:09Frankie Montas Placed on 15-Day Injured List
The New York Mets announced that they have placed right-hander Frankie Montas (elbow) on the 15-day injured list with a UCL injury in his pitching elbow, retroactive to Friday. The team recalled righty Huascar Brazoban from Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move. UCL injuries often lead to long absences for pitchers, so it's possible that Montas won't return in 2025. Regardless, this has been a season to forget for Montas, who hasn't fared well since joining the Mets on a two-year, $34 million contract in free agency last winter. After Montas suffered a high-grade lat strain during the spring, he didn't make his season debut until June 24. Between then and Saturday's IL placement, Montas went 3-2 with a 6.28 ERA, a 1.60 WHIP, and 32:14 K:BB in 38 2/3 innings. The 32-year-old made his two most recent appearances in relief after failing to impress over seven starts.

Tue Aug 1221:31Frankie Montas Moves to Bullpen, Hopes for Reset in Relief Role
New York Mets right-hander Frankie Montas was officially moved to the bullpen on Tuesday after continued struggles in the rotation. The 32-year-old veteran has started seven of his eight outings this year and has pitched to a 6.38 ERA and 1.55 WHIP--numbers that mark one of the worst stretches of his career. Despite Montas falling short, the Mets starting rotation as a whole has impressed, ranking third in the National League with a 3.65 ERA. A move to the bullpen presents a possible reset for Montas, who has yet to find consistent success since joining New York's pitching staff.

Mon Aug 417:10Frankie Montas Will Make Next Outing on Saturday
New York Mets right-hander Frankie Montas will make his next scheduled outing on Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers, according to manager Carlos Mendoza. However, Mets officials are discussing the possibility of using an opener in front of Montas this weekend, per MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. Montas got a late start to the 2025 season due to injury and hasn't been very good in his first seven starts for the Mets. The 32-year-old Dominican is currently sporting a 6.68 ERA (5.07 FIP) and 1.54 WHIP with 29 strikeouts and 10 walks over his 33 2/3 innings pitched. Montas has been roughed up early in games as well, so the Mets will be hoping he might be more effective if he doesn't start the game against the first-place Brew Crew on Saturday. Regardless of whether Montas is the traditional starter or bulk reliever this weekend, fantasy managers should be looking to stay away.

Tue Jun 2416:50Frankie Montas Making Season Debut on Tuesday
The New York Mets announced on Tuesday that they reinstated right-hander Frankie Montas (lat) from the 60-day injured list and optioned right-hander Chris Devenski to Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move. Montas will make his 2025 debut on Tuesday and make the start against the division-rival Atlanta Braves at Citi Field. The 32-year-old veteran has been out all season until this point with a strained right lat that he suffered at the start of spring training. While he could serve as useful pitching depth in deeper fantasy leagues in the second half of the season, we wouldn't recommend rolling with Montas as a streamer right away against Atlanta. In his six minor-league rehab starts, Montas posted a 12.05 ERA with 12 strikeouts and 10 walks in 18 2/3 innings. Don't expect his strikeout rate to suddenly bounce back after all the injuries he's endured in recent seasons.

Thu Jun 1915:32Frankie Montas Allows Five Earned Runs in Latest Rehab Start
New York Mets right-hander Frankie Montas (lat) didn't look like a pitcher ready to make his 2025 big-league debut during his latest minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday, allowing five earned runs on seven hit (one homer) while walking one and striking out only two in five innings of work to pick up a loss against Triple-A Jacksonville. The 32-year-old did go 80 pitches in the outing, but he's posted a 12.05 ERA and 2.14 WHIP with 12 strikeouts and 10 walks in 18 2/3 frames over his six rehab starts with Syracuse and High-A Brooklyn. He's set to come off the injured list on June 23 after missing the entire season to this point with a lat injury suffered in spring training. Based on how Montas has looked in the minors and the fact the Mets could ease him in out of the bullpen, fantasy managers in mixed leagues won't be very interested.

Mon Jun 1614:40Frankie Montas Could Return in Relief Role
New York Mets right-hander Frankie Montas (lat) allowed eight runs in just 1 2/3 innings in his latest minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Syracuse on Friday. There is only time for him to make one more rehab start before his 30-day rehab clock expires on June 22. The 32-year-old says he's healthy and making progress, but if the Mets don't think he's made enough progress, they could use him out of the bullpen when he returns to the major-league roster, according to The Athletic's Tim Britton. The Dominican hurler now sports a 13.17 ERA and 2.34 WHIP with 10 strikeouts and nine walks in 13 2/3 innings in his five rehab starts with Syracuse and High-A Brooklyn as he recovers from a lat strain he suffered in spring training. Montas should make starts for New York in the second half, but it sounds like he could be eased in out of the bullpen.

Mon Jun 913:17Frankie Montas Gives Up Three Runs in Rehab Start
New York Mets right-hander Frankie Montas (lat) made his fourth minor-league rehab start on Sunday with Triple-A Syracuse and allowed three earned runs on four hits (two homers) while walking three and striking out two in 3 2/3 innings. He threw 43 of his 76 pitches for strikes. The 32-year-old veteran is on the 60-day injured list and hasn't pitched at all during the regular season after injuring his lat in spring training. The Mets are in no rush to bring Montas back, so fantasy managers should expect him to make a few more rehab starts before potentially returning to the starting rotation in late June or early July. In his four rehab starts, Montas has a 9.00 ERA and 2.00 WHIP with eight walks and nine K's in 12 innings. The Dominican hurler made just one appearance in 2023 due to injury and was up and down in 30 starts with the Reds and Brewers last year, posting a 4.84 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 150 2/3 frames.

Mon May 2616:08Frankie Montas Begins Rehab Assignment
New York Mets right-hander Frankie Montas (lat) started his minor-league rehab assignment on Saturday with High-A Brooklyn, according to The Athletic's Tim Britton. Montas is likely to need close to the full 30 days for his rehab assignment before he's ready to return to the big-league starting rotation. The 32-year-old veteran has been out since suffering a high-grade right-lat strain in February. In his first rehab start over the weekend at Brooklyn, Montas only went 1 2/3 innings and allowed two earned runs on two hits while walking two and striking out one. Fantasy managers will be hesitant to trust Montas in starting lineups whenever he returns to make his Mets debut after he was inconsistent with a 4.55 ERA (4.35 FIP) and 1.26 WHIP with 70 strikeouts and 25 walks in 30 starts with the Reds and Brewers a year ago.

Fri May 1622:55Frankie Montas Throws Live Batting Practice
New York Mets right-hander Frankie Montas (lat) was scheduled to throw a live batting practice session in the Bronx on Friday before the team's series opener against the crosstown-rival New York Yankees, according to Newsday's Laura Albanese. It was a big step for Montas, as it was his first time facing live hitters since suffering a high-grade right-lat strain in mid-February at the start of spring training. The next step for the 32-year-old veteran will be to start a minor-league rehab assignment. Because of all the time off, Montas is expected to have a lengthy rehab assignment, but barring setbacks after he starts pitching in games, he could be activated from the 60-day injured list to make his Mets and 2025 debut in early June. The Dominican hurler made just one appearance in 2023 while recovering from shoulder surgery and was very inconsistent with the Brewers and Reds in 2024 with a 4.84 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 150 2/3 innings. Fantasy managers have to hope the Mets' coaching staff can turn him around.

Sat May 1009:58Frankie Montas Could Face Hitters Next Week
New York Mets right-hander Frankie Montas (lat) threw his fourth bullpen session on Friday, and his goal is to face live hitters by the end of next week, according to NorthJersey.com's Andrew Tredinnick. Montas was shut down from throwing for almost two months after he was diagnosed with a high-grade right-lat strain in mid-February at the start of spring training. The 32-year-old veteran restarted a throwing program in mid-April, though, and is slowly making progress towards his 2025 season debut with the Mets. The Dominican hurler is ahead of lefty Sean Manaea, who is ramping up from an oblique injury. Montas is currently on the 60-day injured list and isn't expected to rejoin New York's starting rotation until early June, barring a setback. He made just one appearance in 2023 due to injury and was up and down while allowing a ton of hard contact with Milwaukee and Cincy a season ago.

Wed May 719:44Frankie Montas Throws Third Bullpen
New York Mets right-hander Frankie Montas (lat) threw his third bullpen session on Tuesday but still needs a full spring training-style buildup before he's cleared to rejoin the Mets' starting rotation. Montas suffered a high-grade lat strain in mid-February before the start of spring training and went six to eight weeks without throwing at all. There's a chance we could see the 32-year-old veteran later this month, but it's more likely that he won't make his debut with New York until sometime in June after a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment. The Mets shifted Montas to the 60-day injured list last week. Montas made just one appearance in 2023 due to injury and was very inconsistent with the Reds and Brewers last year, posting a 4.84 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 148:66 K:BB in 150 2/3 innings. Fantasy managers just have to hope the Mets can turn him around like they have so far with Griffin Canning.

Thu May 117:52Frankie Montas Moves To 60-Day Injured List
The New York Mets transferred right-hander Frankie Montas (lat) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Thursday, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. It's merely a procedural move and won't affect Montas' timetable for return. He is not eligible to come off the IL until June. The 32-year-old veteran has been out all season to this point after suffering a high-grade right-lat strain early in spring training. When Montas is eventually ready after embarking on a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment, he should have a starting-rotation spot waiting for him in New York after signing a two-year, $34 million deal last December. The Dominican hurler only threw 1 1/3 innings in 2023 due to injury and was very mediocre with a 4.84 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in his 30 starts with the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers last year, so fantasy managers may want to temper expectations when he returns.

Wed Apr 215:20Frankie Montas Playing Catch From 60 Feet
New York Mets right-hander Frankie Montas (lat) has resumed throwing and has played catch from 60 feet, according to manager Carlos Mendoza. Montas has finally started a throwing program since he suffered a high-grade right-lat strain at the start of spring training in the middle of February. Because of the long layoff and the fact that he has to completely build up his arm, the 32-year-old veteran hurler should be expected to miss at least the first month of the season, and possibly more. He was better after being traded to the Brewers last year, but Montas was still very inconsistent overall in 2024 and finished with a 4.84 ERA and 1.37 WHIP with 148 strikeouts and 66 walks in 150 2/3 innings over 30 starts with Milwaukee and Cincinnati. Especially since he hasn't shown a ton of strikeout upside in his career, Montas should be on the waiver wire in 12-team mixed fantasy leagues for the time being.

Wed Mar 2619:48Frankie Montas Gets Encouraging MRI Results
New York Mets starting pitcher Frankie Montas (lat) underwent an MRI earlier this week that showed good healing, according to president of baseball operations David Stearns. The right-hander remains a week or two away from beginning a throwing program. The 32-year-old suffered a high-grade lat strain early in camp. The expectation is that Montas is going to be sidelined for the first month of the season. The organization is hopeful Montas can return to the starting rotation at some point in May. Montas is coming off a fairly average season in 2024, so he's not someone that must be stashed in fantasy formats.

Wed Feb 1914:07Frankie Montas "Already Feeling Better"
New York Mets right-hander Frankie Montas (lat), who has been diagnosed with a high-grade lat strain, said he's "already feeling better" from the platelet-rich plasma injection that he received at camp this week. Montas will not throw for four to six weeks, which is a little more optimistic than the team's projection. "It's not how you start," Montas said. "It's how you finish." The Mets said earlier this week that the 31-year-old veteran would be kept from throwing for six to eight weeks. It's not uncommon for players to be more optimistic, but that doesn't mean he'll return sooner than later in 2025, especially when considering his past injury concerns. Once Montas resumes throwing, he's going to need a full spring training's worth of time to ramp up, which means he's pretty much a lock to miss at least the first month of the regular season.

Mon Feb 1714:17Frankie Montas Has High-Grade Lat Strain, To Be Shut Down 6-8 Weeks
The New York Post's Jon Heyman reports that New York Mets right-hander Frankie Montas (lat) is dealing with a high-grade lat strain and will be shut down for six to eight weeks. Once he's healthy enough to return, he'll need a full spring-training buildup. It's early bad news for New York's starting rotation and means that Montas will not be ready for Opening Day in his first year in Queens. The 31-year-old signed a two-year, $34 million deal with the Mets in the offseason but will now receive a platelet-rich plasma injection in hopes of speeding up his recovery. At the very least, Montas will likely miss all of the first month of the season and probably more. It means that both Griffin Canning and Tylor Megill could begin the year in the Mets' starting rotation, with Paul Blackburn (back) also competing for a spot.

Mon Dec 2 202414:04Frankie Montas Joins The Mets
Free-agent right-hander Frankie Montas signed a two-year deal worth $34 million on Sunday with the New York Mets. The deal includes an opt-out clause after the 2025 season and $17 million per year. Montas, 31, comes to the Big Apple after spending the 2024 campaign with the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers. He went a combined 7-11 during the regular season with a 4.84 ERA (4.71 FIP), a 1.37 WHIP and a 148:66 K:BB in 150 2/3 innings pitched over 30 starts. Montas, who made just one outing the year prior with the New York Yankees due to injury, was better in Milwaukee with a 4.55 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in his 11 start (57 1/3 innings). The veteran right-hander will fill one of New York's starting rotation spots in 2025 and will look to improve upon his 2024 numbers another year removed from injury. Montas' 28.7% strikeout rate last year was encouraging.
