Tue Jul 2915:06Ryan Mountcastle Unlikely to Return Until Next Week
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (hamstring) is eligible to return from the injured list on Wednesday, but MLB.com's Jake Rill writes that he is unlikely to return to the O's until next week's series against the Philadelphia Phillies, which starts on Monday, Aug. 4. Mountcastle has been out for almost two months with a strained right hamstring, so the Orioles would like to see him play in a few more minor-league rehab games. When the 28-year-old does finally return from the IL, he could be splitting first base duties with Coby Mayo if Ryan O'Hearn is sent packing at this week's trade deadline. If O'Hearn isn't traded, it could be more of a struggle for regular playing time for Mountcastle, who was hitting .246 (46-for-187) with only two home runs, 15 RBI and 19 runs scored before his hammy injury. Since hitting a career-high 33 bombs in 21, Mountcastle's power has declined.

Wed Jul 2318:31Ryan Mountcastle Beginning Rehab Assignment on Thursday
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (hamstring) is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday, according to O's interim manager Tony Mansolino. Mountcastle has been sidelined since late May due to a right hamstring strain. He's not eligible to return until the end of July, so he figures to be back with the O's in early August. Mountcastle was struggling with the bat before going down with his injury. He's not someone that must be rostered right now as a starting spot might not be guaranteed when he returns.

Tue Jul 1513:31Ryan Mountcastle to Start Rehab Assignment on July 22
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (hamstring) is scheduled to begin a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk on July 22, according to MLB.com. Mountcastle was diagnosed with a Grade 2 right-hamstring strain and was moved to the 60-day injured list on June 23. Barring a setback on his rehab assignment, he could be activated on July 30 or shortly thereafter. The 28-year-old right-handed hitter has been out since the end of May but should return to regular duties at first base in Baltimore when he's ready. In the meantime, expect Ryan O'Hearn and Coby Mayo to continue splitting time at the cold corner for the O's coming out of this week's All-Star break. Mountcastle had been a disappointment for fantasy managers before his hamstring injury, slashing .246/.280/.348 with a weak .628 OPS, only two homers, 15 RBI and 19 runs in 187 at-bats.

Sat Jul 1214:07Ryan Mountcastle Ramping Up for a Return
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (hamstring) has started ramping up his physical activities as he prepares for a return to the team's lineup. He was spotted doing resistance running as well as swinging a bat during pre-game warmups. While Mountcastle still has a ways to go, he continues to improve daily. Originally given a timeline of 8 to 12 weeks for a return, he is almost five weeks removed from that diagnosis. The 28-year-old will likely need a lengthy rehab assignment before being cleared to rejoin Baltimore's lineup. Mountcastle is worth stashing in deep leagues and in 12-team leagues on teams that are looking for corner infield or first base help.

Mon Jun 2316:19Orioles Transfer Ryan Mountcastle to 60-Day Injured List
The Baltimore Orioles announced on Monday that they transferred infielder Ryan Mountcastle (hamstring) to the 60-day injured list. The team also placed catcher Maverick Handley (head) on the seven-day concussion injured list and selected the contract of catcher Chadwick Tromp from Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move. The move to put Mountcastle on the 60-day IL was probably inevitable after he was given an eight- to 12-week timetable following a Grade 2 right-hamstring strain on May 30. The 28-year-old will not be ready to rejoin the Orioles lineup until sometime in the second half of the season. Until then, Ryan O'Hearn will continue to serve in the strong side of a platoon at first base in Baltimore with Coby Mayo also filling in. Mountcastle was hitting .246 with only two home runs and 15 RBI in 187 at-bats at the time of his injury.

Fri Jun 620:37Ryan Mountcastle Out 8-12 Months With Grade 2 Hamstring Strain
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (hamstring) has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 right-hamstring strain and will be out for eight to 12 weeks, according to interim manager Tony Mansolino. Depending on how his rehab goes, Mountcastle probably won't make it back now until August. It's good news for infield prospect Coby Mayo, who has been splitting playing time at first base with the left-handed-hitting Ryan O'Hearn since Mountcastle landed on the 10-day injured list last Saturday. The former first-rounder (36th overall) in 2015 isn't a must-hold corner infielder in deep-mixed fantasy leagues now that we know he'll be out for multiple months. Before getting hurt, Mountcastle had a very mediocre .246/.280/.348 slash line with a weak .628 OPS, only two home runs, 15 RBI, 19 runs and a steal in 187 at-bats for the O's.

Sat May 3112:24Orioles Place Ryan Mountcastle on 10-Day Injured List With Hamstring Strain
The Baltimore Orioles announced on Saturday that they placed infielder Ryan Mountcastle (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list with a right-hamstring strain and selected the contract of outfielder Jordyn Adams from Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move. The O's also recalled infield prospect Coby Mayo from Norfolk and designated catcher Chadwick Tromp for assignment. Mountcastle will miss at least the next 10 days after tweaking his right hamstring in Friday's win over the Chicago White Sox. In his absence, Baltimore could use a platoon at the hot corner between Ryan O'Hearn and Emmanuel Rivera. Before his injury, Mountcastle had been a pretty mediocre contributor for fantasy managers in deeper leagues with a .246/.280/.348 slash line, .628 OPS, only two homers, 15 RBI, 19 runs scored and a stolen base in 187 at-bats.

Fri May 3018:58Ryan Mountcastle Leaves Game With Hamstring Injury
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (hamstring) left the team's game against the Chicago White Sox on Friday with right hamstring discomfort. The Orioles replaced Mountcastle in the eighth inning with Cooper Hummel, who took over in right field as Ryan O'Hearn shifted to first base. Before exiting, Mountcastle went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. More notably, he pulled off the rare feat of stealing home in the sixth inning. It was his first stolen base of the season. The 28-year-old has hit an ice-cold .246/.280/.348 with two home runs in 200 plate appearances this season, but he has looked better of late with three straight multi-hit games. The Orioles should have more on his status after the game.

Sat May 1714:15Ryan Mountcastle Out of Saturday's Lineup
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle is not in Saturday's lineup when the Orioles continue a series against the Washington Nationals. Mountcastle has started in each of the past 18 games. Fantasy managers should expect the 28-year-old to return to the starting nine on Sunday. Over his last 18 contests, Mountcastle has posted a .239/.263/.366 slash line with six doubles, one home run, and nine RBI. During this stretch, he has held an 18:3 K:BB. Under the hood, Mountcastle has generated an above-average .264 xBA and a .456 xSLG, which suggest he should continue to see positive regression later this season. He has also generated an elite 50.9% hard-hit rate. This afternoon, Ryan O'Hearn will shift to first base and will bat in the two-hole.

Sat Apr 2612:54Adley Rutschman, Ryan Mountcastle Not In Game 1 Lineup
Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman and first baseman Ryan Mountcastle will take a seat in game one of their doubleheader on Saturday against the Detroit Tigers with Casey Mize on the mound. Both Orioles hitters have been struggling lately; however, the decision by manager Brandon Hyde not to start them in Game 1 is due to the nature of the doubleheader, so fantasy managers should not look too much into it. In the meantime, Gary Sanchez will start behind the plate and bat eighth in place of Rutschman. Ryan O'Hearn will start at first base because of Mountcastle, moving Jordan Westburg into the designated hitter spot while Ramon Urias starts at third base.

Sat Apr 1912:51Ryan Mountcastle Not In Saturday's Lineup
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle is not in the starting nine on Saturday afternoon when the Orioles continue a series against the Cincinnati Reds. Mountcastle has been in the starting lineup in each of the past seven contests. During this stretch, he has held a modest .167/.200/.333 line. He will get a chance to recover and will likely rejoin the lineup on Sunday. Instead, the Orioles will give Ryan O'Hearn the starting nod at first base. He will bat in the cleanup spot. Mountcastle has held an overall .242/.227/.339 slash line. However, he has generated an elite 55.3 percent hard-hit, which suggests he should see positive regression. O'Hearn is not worth targeting in DFS this afternoon as he will face Cincinnati ace, Hunter Greene.

Mon Apr 1406:13Ryan Mountcastle Homers In Orioles Loss
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle hit his first home run of the season on Sunday afternoon in Baltimore. His solo shot in the second inning gave the Orioles a 2-1 lead at the time, but the O's ultimately lost 7-6 in extra innings to split the rain-shortened two-game series with the Blue Jays. Mountcastle finished the day 2-for-4 and is hitting .271 in his first 15 games, matching his batting average from last season. This was his first home run of the season, and he now has four RBI to go with eight runs scored and a .300 wOBA. His barrel rate and hard-hit rate are up this year, per Statcast, and that could result in positive regression as the season continues if he keeps hitting the ball so well. Next up for Mountcastle and the Orioles is a three-game home series against the Guardians, which begins Tuesday after a scheduled off-day Monday.

Tue Apr 821:14Ryan Mountcastle Absent On Tuesday
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle is out of the lineup on Tuesday against the Diamondbacks. Instead, Ryan O'Hearn will man first base while Adley Rutschman shifts to DH. This is likely just a breather for the slugger, who has played in each of Baltimore's last eight games. On the season, he is batting .324 with a .359 OBP but has yet to hit his first long ball of the season. He'll be looking to improve on the 13 he hit last year, now that the left field fence has been moved in at Camden Yards.

Sun Apr 618:47Ryan Mountcastle Registers Three Hits
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle put together a strong day at the plate during Sunday's game against the Kansas City Royals. This offense wasn't able to do much, but Mountcastle was still able to have a successful game. He went 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple and a run scored in what ended up being a 4-1 loss. Mountcastle has been red-hot as he's 5-for-9 over his last two games. The O's are loaded with talented hitters, so it's unclear if Mountcastle will really be an everyday player anymore. However, the O's can't bench him if he continues to hit like he has early in the season. Mountcastle isn't a must-have fantasy player, but he certainly has opened some eyes with his performances lately.

Thu Apr 312:07Ryan Mountcastle Sitting In Series Finale Against Boston
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle will receive a day of rest in Thursday's series finale against the visiting division-rival Boston Red Sox at Camden Yards. The left-handed-hitting Ryan O'Hearn will start at first base and bat cleanup for the O's versus right-hander Tanner Houck. Mountcastle has started five of the team's first seven games in the early going and has gone 5-for-20 at the plate with a double, RBI, three runs scored, one walk and four strikeouts in 21 plate appearances. O'Hearn is much better against right-handed pitchers and is swinging a hot bat early on, going 6-for-15 with two doubles and two runs scored in four games played. He's worth taking a serious look at for DFS contests on a small Thursday slate against Houck, who he's hit .375 against with a solo home run in eight career at-bats.

Sat Mar 2913:51Ryan Mountcastle, Tyler O'Neill Sitting On Saturday
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle and outfielder Tyler O'Neill will not play on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Both players were in the starting lineup for their first two contests. Instead, Ryan O'Hearn will cover first base and bat third, and Heston Kjerstad will cover right field and bat sixth. Mountcastle has gone 1-for-9 with a double over his first two games. O'Neill has enjoyed an impressive start to his Baltimore tenure as he has gone 3-for-6 with a long ball and four RBI. O'Hearn enjoyed great success against right-handers last summer as he posted a .264/.338/.439 slash line with 15 home runs. Kjerstad has flashed elite upside at times at Triple-A but has yet to see it translate to the big leagues. O'Hearn is worth a look in DFS, but Kjerstad carries more risk given his lack of consistent production.

Wed Jan 2908:10Mets Interested In Acquiring Ryan Mountcastle
According to Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated, the New York Mets have shown interest in acquiring Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle. Owner Steve Cohen has noted that negotiations with Pete Alonso have hit a standstill, and the team has begun to pivot to other options. Earlier in the offseason, they acquired Jesse Winker to potentially fill a spot in the lineup. In addition, the team has been linked to Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson. Mountcastle is a much more proven major league bat than Torkelson. Last season, Mountcastle posted a .271/.308/.425 line with 13 home runs. However, before the modifications in left field of Camden Yards, Mountcastle had 20+ HR upside and hit a career-best 33 HRs in 2021. Mountcastle generated strong underlying metrics in 2024, which suggest he could still provide high upside power production. For now, fantasy managers should expect Mark Vientos to be the favorite to play first base in Queens.

Thu Sep 26 202416:44Ryan Mountcastle Not Playing On Thursday
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle is not in the team's starting lineup for Thursday's series finale at Yankee Stadium against the New York Yankees. With Mountcastle starting on the bench, the left-handed-hitting Ryan O'Hearn will play first base and bat sixth against Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole. Mountcastle just returned from the injured list on Tuesday due to a wrist injury and has gone 2-for-7 with an RBI and two strikeouts in his first two games back. The Orioles are easing him in ahead of the postseason and will give him a day off against one of the most dominant pitchers in the game. O'Hearn won't be too popular in DFS against Cole. In his 17 career at-bats against him, O'Hearn has hit .118 with a .471 OPS, one home run and two RBI. O'Hearn has been hot of late, going 8-for-21 (.381) with three doubles and two RBI since Sept. 17.

Tue Sep 24 202416:07Ryan Mountcastle Reinstated From Injured List
The Baltimore Orioles reinstated infielder Ryan Mountcastle (wrist) from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday and optioned outfielder/designated hitter Eloy Jimenez to Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move. The O's haven't released their lineup for Tuesday's contest against the division-rival New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium, but it wouldn't be a surprise if Mountcastle is eased back into the fold as he returns from a left-wrist sprain that has kept him out for the past month. Before his injury, though, the 27-year-old right-handed hitter was the team's primary first baseman. Mountcastle's power has been down again this year, and he was in a 3-for-22 slump at the plate before his injury. In addition to that, he had six strikeouts in 11 minor-league rehab at-bats before his return on Tuesday. It could take him a while to get back in a groove at the plate.

Fri Sep 20 202417:09Ryan Mountcastle Starting Rehab Assignment On Friday
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (wrist) is starting a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk on Friday, according to the team. Mountcastle will remain with Norfolk through Sunday when the minor-league season ends. After that, the 27-year-old right-handed hitter will most likely rejoin the big-league roster next week. Mountcastle has been out almost a month with a left-wrist sprain, so it wouldn't be a surprise if Baltimore looked to ease him back into regular duties in the final month of the 2024 regular season before postseason play begins in early October. His return will surely be a boost for the O's offense heading into the playoffs, but Mountcastle's wrist sprain also won't help his cause to boost his power to close out the season. The former 36th overall pick in 2015 has only 13 bombs in 2024, 61 RBI and 53 runs scored in 452 at-bats.
