Thu Jul 31 | 14:19 | Yankees Discussing Sandy Alcantara, Edward Cabrera |
The New York Yankees have had dialogue with the Miami Marlins about both right-handers Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera, sources tell MLB Network's Jon Morosi. The Marlins have asked for outfielder Spencer Jones, who is currently sporting a 1.115 OPS at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but a couple different concepts have been discussed. Jones is New York's No. 4 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, and has some of the most high-end power upside that the minors have to offer. However, the Yankees are still looking for help for their starting rotation despite the impending return of right-hander Luis Gil (lat) this weekend. Clarke Schmidt and Gerrit Cole are done for the season with injuries. Alcantara is the more attractive upside piece long term, but the 29-year-old Dominican has been inconsistent in 2025 with a 6.36 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in his first season back from Tommy John surgery. |

Sat Jul 26 | 11:28 | Mets Interested in Sandy Alcantara |
The New York Mets are "among the teams that have checked in" on Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post. Puma notes that the asking price for Alcantara is "steep." The 29-year-old right-hander has struggled this season after missing all of 2024 due to Tommy John surgery. In 104 innings pitched, he's 5-9 with a 6.66 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and 77 strikeouts. Nevertheless, Alcantara is a former Cy Young Award winner who is under contract at a reasonable rate through 2027. If the Mets were able to acquire him and help him return to form, he'd be in a better situation to rack up wins for both this year and the future. |

Thu Jul 17 | 08:19 | Sandy Alcantara Could Be Moved By the Marlins |
The Miami Marlins have exceeded expectations this season, but are still expected to be sellers at the trade deadline to some extent. The team is listening to offers for starting pitchers Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera, along with outfielder Jesus Sanchez and relief pitcher Anthony Bender. Alcantara is the biggest name of the bunch, but he has been inconsistent this season and was crushed for a 9.53 ERA in his three most recent starts after a few strong outings. Cabrera is 3-4 with a 3.61 ERA and 3.69 FIP this season and has been more effective than Alcantara, even though he's much less established. He has an injury history to consider, but he could be a nice addition to a contender's rotation. Sanchez is a power-hitting lefty with upside, and Bender has posted a 2.06 ERA in 40 appearances out of the bullpen this season. The Marlins have been active at the deadline in the past few years, and they have some of the best assets to offer again this season, making them worth monitoring very closely over the next couple of weeks. |

Mon Jul 14 | 18:52 | Sandy Alcantara No Longer a Trade Chip? |
Miami Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara might not be traded this summer if he continues to struggle, writes USA TODAY Sports' Bob Nightengale. It's been a disaster for Alcantara, who missed all of 2024 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. The 29-year-old two-time All-Star and former National League Cy Young winner has given up 19 earned runs in his last 18 innings pitched for a 9.50 ERA going into this week's All-Star break. All in all, Alcantara has gone 4-9 for the Fish with a career-worst 7.22 ERA (4.59 FIP) and 1.48 WHIP with 71 strikeouts and 37 walks in 91 innings over his 18 starts. His 73 earned runs allowed are a league high. Alcantara had a stretch in June that suggested he might be getting over the hump before really struggling of late. Contending teams looking for starting arms may be hesitant to trade young assets for him at the July 31 trade deadline. |

Sat Jun 28 | 22:52 | Sandy Alcantara Struggles on Saturday |
Miami Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara was hit around in an 8-7 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday. Alcantara yielded seven earned runs on a season-worst 10 hits with four strikeouts and no walks in six innings. He did not factor into the decision. The former Cy Young winner had gone four straight starts with at least five innings pitched and two or fewer runs allowed. However, his ERA now sits at an unsightly 6.98 with a 1.48 WHIP and 63:34 K:BB across 80 frames. The 29-year-old has been prone to blowups, having surrendered five or more earned runs six times in 16 outings. He's scheduled to take the mound July 4 against a respectable Milwaukee Brewers offense. |

Thu Jun 26 | 00:13 | Cubs Making Inquiries on Sandy Alcantara, Edward Cabrera |
The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal writes that the Chicago Cubs are already canvassing the starting pitching market and have made inquiries on Miami Marlins right-handers Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera, among many others, according to sources briefed on their plans. Alcantara is owed the balance of his $17 million salary this year and $17 million in 2026 with a $21 million club option for 2027. Cabrera is earning only $1.95 million with three more years of salary arbitration remaining. He'd be the better financial fit, but Alcantara has the much higher ceiling and is looking more like his pre-injury self after missing all of 2024 after having Tommy John surgery. The Cubs are also reportedly considering Pirates right-hander Mitch Keller, while Arizona's Zac Gallen and Baltimore's Zach Eflin could become available this summer as the July 31 trade deadline nears. |

Tue Jun 24 | 14:07 | Sandy Alcantara to be on the Move Soon? |
ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan put Miami Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara's chances of being traded this summer at 60 percent. Alcantara was the National League Cy Young winner in 2022 and then missed all of last year after having Tommy John surgery. He did not look like himself upon his initial return this year, but he's been tinkering with his pitch mix and locations and is slowly rounding back into form with a 2.74 ERA in his four June starts. Miami could wait to trade Alcantara until this winter, but if they do so earlier, teams like the Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros, Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and Baltimore Orioles could all be in the market. The 29-year-old has two years left on his current deal and could be a difference-maker for a rotation down the stretch. |

Mon Jun 23 | 00:13 | Sandy Alcantara Snags Fourth Win |
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara allowed six hits and three earned runs over six innings in his team's 5-3 win against the visiting Atlanta Braves. He walked two and struck out four to notch his fourth quality start and third over his last four outings. After a woeful first few months, Alcantara has turned it around in June, pitching to a 2.74 ERA and 1.00 WHIP through 23 innings (four starts) with a 19:5 K:BB ratio. While it may be too early to tell if he's regaining his pre-elbow injury form, it's undoubtedly nice to see him bring his walk rate down, as he racked up 13 and 12 in April and May, respectively. He'll square off against a strong Arizona Diamondbacks squad later this week on the road. |

Thu Jun 12 | 15:23 | Sandy Alcantara's Command Improving? |
Miami Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara has looked better his last two starts, but they came against the lowly Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates. However, manager Clayton McCullough saw a difference in "the quality of Sandy's throws." A rival official also said, "I walked away saying he is about three or four starts away from being the Sandy of old." The 29-year-old Dominican is sitting on an ERA north of 7.00 with a 1.49 WHIP in his first 13 starts since returning from Tommy John surgery, but if he's able to bounce back, he will be one of the best starters available on the trade market this summer. Like many hurlers coming off TJ surgery, Alcantara's walk rate was bloated. Most of his stuff is back to pre-injury quality, but command has eluded him. He's using his fastball and curve more while adapting his pitch mix depending on the lineups he faces. Fantasy managers shouldn't give up on Alcantara. |

Tue Jun 10 | 21:47 | Sandy Alcantara Blanks Pirates in Third Win |
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara tossed six shutout innings in his team's 3-2 win against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He let up three hits, one walk, and struck out six to notch his second consecutive quality start. The Dominican Republic native easily compiled his best outing of 2025, yielding no earned runs for the first time all season, and picking up his first win in nearly two months (Apr. 12). That marks back-to-back solid outings for Alcantara, and the first time since his first two starts that he's allowed two earned runs or fewer. Maybe he's finally turned a corner after a few months of dismal performance. He'll look to keep it rolling in a much more difficult matchup his next time out -- early next week at home against the Philadelphia Phillies. |

Thu May 29 | 02:59 | Sandy Alcantara Torched by Padres in No-Decision |
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara allowed seven hits and six earned runs over four innings and was dealt a no-decision in Wednesday's 10-8 win against the San Diego Padres. The Dominican Republic native issued four free passes and struck out none. Alcantara made it through the first three innings with just one run allowed on two hits, but things unraveled in the fourth. After starting the inning with a fly out, he'd enable six straight batters to reach base safely, culminating in a five-run outburst for the Friars. It could have been worse, but Fernando Tatis Jr. was fortunately thrown out at home to end the threat. To put it plainly, the veteran has been dreadful -- yielding four earned runs or more in eight of his last nine outings, and six or more thrice. He'll look for better results his next time out against the Rockies next week, but he'll be difficult to trust even in the excellent matchup. |

Sun May 11 | 18:48 | Sandy Alcantara Allows Four Runs In Loss |
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara is not having a ton of success on the mound right now. He took an 8.42 ERA into Sunday's game against the Chicago White Sox. Alcantara threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits while striking out eight batters. To be fair, Alcantara didn't pitch that bad as a majority of the damage was done on a three-run home run by Tim Elko. The fact Alcantara struck out eight batters did give fantasy managers some value from this outing. The right-hander will need to figure it out in order for the Marlins to get a decent return on Alcantara, assuming they wish to trade him at the deadline. The right-hander will look to get back on track against the Tampa Bay Rays during his next start. |

Wed Apr 30 | 02:17 | Sandy Alcantara Demolished Again On Tuesday |
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara (2-3) had another brutal start on Tuesday, allowing seven runs over 2 innings in a 15-2 loss at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Alcantara allowed seven hits and five walks while recording just two strikeouts. It's been a horrendous start to the season for the 29-year-old, who now carries an 8.31 ERA, 1.65 WHIP, and 19:17 K:BB ratio across 26 IP. The walks are up, the strikeouts are down, and Alcantara seems to be off early in the season. Part of that could be him working his way back from Tommy John surgery, which cost him all of the 2024 season. He should be held onto in most fantasy formats because of his upside, but he needs to be on the bench until he performs. Alcantara's next start should come next Monday and will once again be against the Dodgers, making him an easy sit. |

Sun Apr 13 | 09:41 | Sandy Alcantara Has Shaky Start On Saturday |
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara didn't have a ton of success during Saturday's game against the Washington Nationals. He retired the first nine batters he faced before running into trouble in the fourth inning. Alcantara struggled allowing four runs over the next few innings. He would finish his day with four earned runs on five hits while walking four batters across 5 1/3 innings of work. Alcantara was given enough run support to earn the win, but it wasn't a pretty start from him. The hope is that Alcantara will get back on track against the Arizona Diamondbacks in his next start. |

Wed Apr 9 | 21:30 | Sandy Alcantara To Start On Saturday |
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara (personal) is scheduled to take the mound against the Washington Nationals on Saturday. He was previously scheduled to start last Sunday, but the game against the Atlanta Braves got rained out and then he was placed on the paternity list earlier this week. Alcantara likely would've taken the ball on Monday, but he went on the paternity leave list. He's back now, so fantasy managers can pencil him in to take the mound versus the Nats this weekend. Alcantara has a 3.72 ERA, 0.93 WHIP with 11 strikeouts across two starts this season. |

Sun Apr 6 | 12:54 | Sandy Alcantara Heading For Paternity List |
Sunday's contest at Truist Park between the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves was postponed due to inclement weather, pushing right-hander Sandy Alcantara back. Alcantara also will not start in Monday's series opener against the division-rival New York Mets at Citi Field, as he and his wife expecting a baby girl. He will fly back to Miami on Sunday and will be placed on the paternity list on Monday. The 29-year-old will be away from the team for a few days and won't be able to take his next turn in the starting rotation until later this week, most likely for a series with the division-rival Washington Nationals back in Miami next weekend. Miami's starter for Monday's game in New York is TBD at the moment. The Dominican hurler has a 3.72 ERA and 0.93 WHIP with 11 strikeouts and four walks in 9 2/3 innings in his first two starts after missing all of the 2024 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. |

Sun Mar 9 | 14:34 | Marlins Don't Have Innings Limit For Sandy Alcantara |
Miami Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said that "no innings limit is set on Sandy Alcantara." There have been various reports floating around this spring that Alcantara will be on an innings limit in 2025 after he missed all of last year due to Tommy John surgery. However, Alcantara said on Saturday night that he wasn't aware of any innings limits, and now the team's new skipper has confirmed that. While fantasy managers may still want to temper expectations for the 29-year-old after the long layoff, the news that he won't be held back at all will surely cause his ADP to rise before your league's draft day. That is especially true after the Dominican hurler has looked electric this spring, allowing no runs in his three starts (5 2/3 innings) while striking out five and walking two. The two-time All-Star has ace potential and won the National League Cy Young in 2022 with a 2.28 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 207 K's. |

Sun Mar 9 | 08:18 | Sandy Alcantara Not Aware Of Innings Limit |
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara said he is not aware of a potential innings limit. Earlier in the week, there were reports that former Cy Young winner will be put on an innings limit during the early part of the 2025 season. While this may still occur, the right-hander has not been informed of this strategy. Alcantara is working his way back from Tommy John and slated to be the team's Opening Day starter. After enjoying a career-season in 2022 where he held a 2.28 ERA with a stellar 0.98 WHIP across 228 2/3 innings of work, he took a slight step back in 2023 as he posted a 4.14 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP. During that season he still showed strong command with a 6.3 percent walk rate and generated groundballs at a strong 51.9 percent rate. Even though he may be limited at times during the season, Alcantara is a high upside starting pitcher when healthy. |

Thu Mar 6 | 14:38 | Sandy Alcantara Will Be On Innings Limit Early On |
ESPN's Jeff Passan write that Miami Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara (elbow), who is back after missing all of last year due to Tommy John surgery, will be on an innings limit early this year. The 2022 National League Cy Young winner has looked like his old self in spring training, throwing sinkers at 98-100 mph, mixing in one of the best changeups in the league and also sporting a 90-mph slider. The 29-year-old has been so impressive already that teams are already wondering whether he will be available at this summer's trade deadline, especially since he's under contract through 2026 and has a club option in 2027. There's inherent risk in counting on pitchers coming off TJ surgery in fantasy -- RotoBaller has Alcantara ranked at No. 44 among starting pitchers -- but his draft stock will continue to rise he keeps looking good this spring. In three Grapefruit League starts, Alcantara hasn't allowed a run with five strikeouts in 5 2/3 frames. |

Thu Feb 13 | 13:12 | Sandy Alcantara To Start On Opening Day |
Miami Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara (elbow) has been named the team's Opening Day starter on March 27 against the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to MLB.com's Christina De Nicola. Alcantara missed all of the 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery that he had in October of 2023, but he's avoided any setbacks and is a full-go for spring training. While RotoBaller has Alcantara ranked as the No. 46 fantasy starting pitcher going into the 2025 season because of the fact that the Marlins will likely limit his innings this year, his draft stock should continue to rise if he avoids any setbacks in Grapefruit League games and looks more like his pre-surgery self. The 29-year-old had excellent command and control when he won the National League Cy Young in 2022, but don't be surprised if he's not as sharp out of the gates in his return in 2025. Although the upside won't be as high early on, an Opening Day matchup against the Bucs is enticing. |
